Black Scorpion Ninjutsu Society and Academy of Martial Arts

Black Scorpion Ninjutsu Society Questions and Answers page logo

Starting your martial arts journey is an exciting step, but it is completely normal to have questions before you ever set foot on the mat or join a global society. Whether you are searching for practical self-defense, functional fitness, or a dedicated martial arts brotherhood, the Black Scorpion Ninjutsu Society is here to guide you.

Led by founder Bobby Calvert (aka "Ninja Bob"), our curriculum seamlessly bridges ancient tactical principles with modern combat sports. Below, we answer the most common questions from beginners and experienced martial artists alike.

Do I need to be in shape before I start classes?

Absolutely not. This is the most common myth! You don’t get in shape to do martial arts; you do martial arts to get in shape. Classes are designed to build your cardio, flexibility, and strength gradually.

How can I find updates on upcoming local training sessions or outdoor classes?

Regular announcements regarding class schedules, regional training meetings (such as combined sessions with regional members), and summer "Martial Arts in the Park" locations are distributed directly through the society's official communication channels, local flyers, and community event boards in the Nashville and Hendersonville areas.

Who is the Nashville Ninja?

The "Nashville Ninja" is Bobby Calvert (also known as Ninja Bob), the founder of the Black Scorpion Ninjutsu Society, where he teaches traditional and modern ninjutsu, striking arts, and self-defense in the Middle Tennessee area.

Am I too old to start training?

Martial arts is for everyone. Most schools have students ranging from age 4 to 74. While your goals might differ from a 20-year-old’s, the benefits of balance, mobility, and mental sharpness apply to every age.

What is a female ninja called?

A female ninja is called a kunoichi in Japanese.

Are Ninja and Samurai the same?

Samurais were warriors that belonged to the noble classes of ancient Japanese society. They bound themselves to Bushido (the way of the warrior), which emphasized honor, face-to-face combat, and loyalty. On the other hand, ninja were often mercenaries, and as such they would often belong to the lower classes of ancient Japanese society. Ninja specialized in espionage, sabotage, guerrilla warfare, and assassination—methods considered too "dishonorable" for a samurai.

What gear do I need for my first day?

Usually, just comfortable clothes (no zippers or buttons) and a water bottle. If you stick with it, you’ll eventually need a uniform (Gi), hand wraps, or gloves depending on the style.

Do I have to compete in tournaments?

No. While many schools offer the opportunity to compete, the vast majority of students train for personal growth, fitness, and fun without ever stepping into a competitive ring.

What is a Ninja uniform called?

A traditional Ninja Uniform is called a Shinobi Shōzoku, which translates to "Ninja Outfit".

Where does training take place in the Nashville area?

The society utilizes a mix of indoor and outdoor training environments to foster adaptable skills. Along with scheduled indoor sessions, the group frequently hosts "Martial Arts in the Park" initiatives throughout the summer in Nashville and Hendersonville, allowing students to practice physical conditioning and functional movement in real-world, outdoor settings.

Will I learn how to use my hands effectively?

Yes. Under Ninja Bob’s guidance, you will learn "functional" punching. This means hitting with precision, using the knuckles correctly, and understanding how to generate power from the hips. It is "Boxing for the Street" rather than "Boxing for the Ring."

Do you use boxing equipment?

As a modern Ninjutsu dojo, we utilize heavy bags, focus mitts, and Thai pads to build the same explosive power and cardio that boxers have, but the application is focused on self-defense.

How long does it take to get a Black Belt?

On average, it takes 3 to 5 years of consistent training in arts like Karate or Taekwondo. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it often takes 10 years or more. Remember, a black belt doesn’t mean you’re a "master"—it usually means you’ve mastered the basics and are now ready to truly begin learning.

Do you offer women’s self-defense classes in Nashville, TN?

Yes! Our women's self-defense classes in Nashville teach practical threat awareness, leverage-based escapes, and striking techniques for everyday safety.

Why is the "Rising Sun" included on the membership patch?

The Rising Sun honors the Japanese roots of the Ninjutsu lineage. It symbolizes energy, vitality, and a new beginning. In our Society, it represents the light of knowledge and the "awakening" of the student as they progress through the ranks of the system.

Who is Bobby Calvert (Ninja Bob)?

Bobby Calvert is a veteran martial artist known for his "no-nonsense" approach to Ninjutsu. He is the founder of the Black Scorpion Ninjutsu Society and has spent decades distilling complex ancient techniques into methods that work for modern self-defense. He is known for an accessible, community-focused teaching style.

Do you offer 1-on-1 self defense training in Murfreesboro, TN?

What were the two most famous Ninja Clans?

The Iga and Koka clans (from the modern-day Mie and Shiga prefectures). These regions were mountainous and rugged, allowing independent communities to develop highly specialized guerrilla warfare techniques away from the direct control of the central government.

Is this just about "hiding in the shadows"?

Not at all. While Ninjutsu historically involves stealth, modern training focuses on situational awareness, evasion, and ending a conflict as quickly as possible. You will learn how to use your environment, stay off the "tracks" of an attacker, and maintain a "ninja mindset" (resilience and focus) in daily life.

How can I maintain a regular training routine without access to a gym or traditional equipment?

You don't need fancy gear or a gym membership to build real strength and discipline. Bodyweight training (calisthenics like push-ups, squats, and core work), mobility drills, shadowboxing, and footwork can be done anywhere—in a park, a quiet corner of a shelter, or on a sidewalk. Focus on consistency over equipment; mastering your own body weight is the foundation of all practical fitness.

Do we use weapons in class?

Yes. Ninjutsu is famous for its tools. You will likely be introduced to the Bokken (wooden sword), Hanbo (3-foot staff), and eventually specialized tools like the Kunai or Shuriken. For beginners, training usually starts with "dummy" versions for safety.

Is there a heavy focus on "Katana" (Sword) work?

While sword work is part of the tradition, the Black Scorpion curriculum prioritizes tai-jutsu (unarmed body movement) first. The philosophy is that if you cannot move your own body effectively, you cannot use a weapon effectively.

How does Muay Thai & Ninjutsu work together?

Think of Muay Thai as your delivery system for power and Ninjutsu as your strategic toolkit. Muay Thai gives you the ability to end a fight with a single leg kick or knee, while Ninjutsu teaches you how to disappear, use the environment, or apply a joint lock if the fight goes to the ground.

Will we get in trouble with Park Rangers or Law Enforcement?

No. The Black Scorpion Ninjutsu Society operates in compliance with local park regulations regarding group gatherings. We do not use live steel or open blades in public spaces; all training weapons are clearly identifiable practice tools.

Why does a Ninjutsu society teach Muay Thai?

Because Ninjutsu is about using whatever works. Muay Thai is globally recognized as one of the most effective striking arts. By teaching it, Ninja Bob ensures that Black Scorpion students have the "engine" of a high-level striker combined with the "tactics" of a Ninja.

How does training help with staying clean, sober, and focused on personal goals?

Physical training releases natural endorphins and gives your mind a clear, positive purpose to focus on each day. It demands presence and effort, which helps break the cycle of stress that often drives substance use. Having a structured routine and setting physical milestones builds the confidence needed to make broader life changes.

Are Private Ninjutsu lessons available near Lebanon, TN?

Yes, we provide private, 1-on-1 ninjutsu training near Lebanon, TN for adults looking for authentic instruction in joint locks, movement mechanics, and practical defense.

What is the significance of the "Black Scorpion" name?

In many martial traditions, the scorpion represents a small but formidable opponent that waits for the right moment to strike with precision. It symbolizes the Ninjutsu philosophy of using a smaller force to overcome a larger, more aggressive one.

What is the "Ninja Mindset" regarding survival?

It is called Fudoshin (The Immovable Mind). It means staying calm when everyone else is panicking. Whether you are lost in the woods or stuck in an elevator, we teach you how to control your breathing, assess your situation, and take decisive action.

Will I become more flexible?

Flexibility is a requirement for Ninjutsu. We use "Dynamic Stretching" to ensure you have the range of motion for high kicks, low rolls, and escaping joint locks. You don't need to be able to do the splits on day one, but you will notice your mobility improving within weeks.

What is the meaning of the "Nin" kanji & Why is it part of the Membership patch?

This is the heart of Ninjutsu. The character is made of two parts: a "blade" over a "heart." It translates to endurance, perseverance, and heart under the blade. Under Ninja Bob, this reminds students that a warrior must remain calm and keep their heart steady even in the face of danger.

Are your community outreach programs really 100% free?

Yes, absolutely. Every community outreach program we host is completely free of charge. There are no hidden fees, mandatory membership dues, or equipment costs required to participate. Our mission is to keep these essential resources and opportunities open and accessible to everyone.

Who can join or attend your FREE Nashville Outreach Sessions?

Our outreach initiatives are specifically tailored for:

  • Women seeking empowerment, self-defense skills, and a safe community while navigating or healing from domestic violence.

  • Individuals and families in the Nashville area who are unhoused or in temporary transition and looking for positive mentorship, physical activity, and life-skills support.

How can local organizations or shelters partner with you?

We will collaborate with local Nashville shelters, transitional housing programs, and advocacy groups. If your organization would like to host a workshop or bring our outreach program to your clients, please contact us directly to discuss scheduling and logistics.

I’m hesitant about physical contact or high-intensity workouts due to past trauma. How is this handled?

Every exercise and self-defense drill is 100% voluntary, adaptable, and self-paced. You are always in control of your own space. Instructors focus on building spatial awareness, setting firm physical boundaries, and foundational movement in a calm, supportive environment. You will never be pushed past your comfort level or forced into dynamic contact before you feel ready.

Are your Community Outreach Programs just a one-time workshop, or can I participate long-term?

While single workshops offer immediate practical skills, our goal is long-term mentorship and community support. Participants are encouraged to return regularly to reinforce their training, track their physical progress, and stay connected with a strong, positive network that supports their ongoing journey to stability and independence.

Can martial arts help with mental health and stress?

This is one of the biggest fitness benefits. Hitting the pads is an incredible stress reliever. Furthermore, the Survival Skills and Mindfulness taught in the Black Scorpion curriculum help lower cortisol levels and build "Mental Fitness," allowing you to stay calm during a stressful workday or a survival emergency.

What style of Ninjutsu do you teach?

We teach a dynamic hybrid system that combines foundational techniques and principles from major Ninjutsu lineages—including Bujinkan, To-Shin Do, Koga-ryu, and Genbukan Ninjutsu.

To complement traditional and modern Ninjutsu, our curriculum integrates the powerful striking of Muay Thai, the hands-on control and grappling of Judo, and the precise footwork and upper-body mechanics of Boxing. This comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach eliminates range gaps and develops adaptable, well-rounded martial artists prepared for real-world self-defense.

Why focus on bringing different Ninjutsu styles and ryu together?

At the end of the day, we’re all passionate about the same core art. Splitting into factions over lineage or style only weakens the community. When practitioners from different backgrounds train together, share insights, and test their skills without judgment, everyone grows faster and stronger.

What is "Urban Survival" in a Ninjutsu context?

It is the art of navigating and surviving modern environments. This includes situational awareness (spotting threats before they happen), understanding "escapology" (getting out of restraints like zip-ties or duct tape), and knowing how to find exits and resources in a chaotic city environment.

Do I need to buy expensive traditional weapons to participate in the weapon training?

No. For safety and accessibility, beginners always start with padded or wooden training tools (like a Bokken for swordwork or a foam Bō staff). In fact, a core principle of our society is adaptability—we teach you how traditional weapon concepts translate directly into using everyday improvised objects (like a rolled-up magazine, an umbrella, or a flashlight) for modern self-defense..

Why is survival training part of a martial arts society?

Because a warrior who can fight but cannot find clean water or stay warm is not a complete warrior. Ninja Bob teaches that "The Art of the Ninja" is 10% fighting and 90% staying alive. Survival training builds the mental toughness and resourcefulness that makes your Ninjutsu and Muay Thai even more effective.

What is the difference between Taijutsu and the weapon techniques taught here?

In our training, they are actually two sides of the same coin. Taijutsu (unarmed body combat) is the foundation for everything. The way you step, balance, and generate power without a weapon is exactly how you handle a Bō staff or a Katana. We teach that a weapon is simply an extension of your unarmed movement, making your transition between armed and unarmed combat seamless.

Is the training focused solely on combat?

No. The society emphasizes functional fitness and real-world utility. Alongside martial arts techniques, the training frequently integrates survival skills, including wilderness survival, fire-building, urban situational awareness, and outdoor physical conditioning.

Are there outdoor "Survival Camps" or Seminars?

The Black Scorpion Society often takes training "off the mat." We host specialized workshops in the woods where you can test your skills in real-time—practicing stealth movement through brush, tracking, and overnight survival.

What are the benefits of private fighting lessons vs group classes in Nashville?

Private fighting lessons in Nashville provide 100% focused feedback, faster technical mastery, custom pad work, and the ability to train at your exact physical pace without holding back or catching up to a class.

On your patch, what does the Scorpion silhouette signify against the sun?

The silhouette represents the shadow warrior. While the sun is bright and visible, the scorpion is a dark, focused shape within it. It symbolizes the ability to operate "within the light" but remain a dangerous, tactical mystery to an opponent.

Why is physical and martial arts training beneficial for someone experiencing homelessness?

Training goes far beyond physical fitness—it builds mental discipline, self-worth, and internal calm. Living on the street or in temporary housing involves constant stress and uncertainty. Training provides a constructive physical outlet to manage frustration, sharpens situational awareness for personal safety, and restores a sense of control and dignity when everything else feels unstable.

I have pre-existing injuries (e.g., bad knees, lower back pain). Can I still train?

Yes. We modify every technique to fit your body's current capabilities. If a specific movement causes discomfort, our instructors will show you an alternative variation that achieves the same defensive result without strain.

Who is welcome to join or train under this movement?

Anyone with an open mind and a dedication to the art—whether you practice traditional systems, modern adaptations, or hybrid martial arts. If you respect the training and leave your ego at the door, you have a place here.
